Davenport Golf Club

Davenport Golf Club is a welcoming golf and leisure venue in Poynton, Cheshire, centred around an 18-hole parkland course with views across Lyme Park, the Peak District and Cheshire Plain. Alongside golf, the club offers clubhouse, dining, social and function facilities for members, visitors and events.

Energy Gain was appointed to design and install a 50kWp commercial rooftop solar PV system at Davenport Golf Club, helping the club generate renewable electricity on-site and reduce its reliance on grid-supplied energy.

Golf clubs have a range of ongoing electricity requirements across clubhouses, catering facilities, leisure spaces and day-to-day site operations. This makes rooftop solar a practical option for generating electricity during daylight hours while supporting longer-term energy and sustainability objectives.

The completed installation comprises 95 solar panels and is expected to generate approximately 40,431kWh of renewable electricity each year. Over its projected lifetime, the system is forecast to generate approximately 948,133kWh of clean electricity, with estimated annual CO₂ savings of 7 tonnes and total lifetime CO₂ savings of 168 tonnes.

The Challenge

Installing solar at an operational golf club requires careful consideration of the site’s existing facilities, roof space, electrical infrastructure and ongoing activities.

The system needed to be designed to make effective use of the available rooftop space while allowing the club to continue its normal operations throughout the installation.

Working Around an Operational Golf Club

Davenport Golf Club remained an active leisure facility during the installation. Installation activities therefore needed to be carefully planned to maintain safe access for members, visitors and staff while construction work was taking place.

Consideration was also given to the movement of vehicles, equipment and materials around the site to minimise disruption to the club’s day-to-day activities.

Making Effective Use of Rooftop Space

The available roof area needed to be assessed to determine the most suitable layout for the 95 solar panels.

The system was designed to make effective use of the available space while considering roof access, maintenance requirements and the existing building infrastructure.

Coordinating the Installation

The installation of a commercial rooftop solar PV system requires careful coordination of materials, equipment and installation activities.

Energy Gain managed the project from design through to installation and commissioning, ensuring the system was delivered around the operational requirements of the golf club.

Our Solution

Energy Gain designed and installed a 50kWp rooftop solar PV system comprising 95 solar panels at Davenport Golf Club.

The system was designed around the available roof space and the site’s electricity requirements, providing the club with a source of renewable electricity generated directly on-site.

By generating electricity from the solar PV system, Davenport Golf Club can use renewable energy during daylight hours while reducing the amount of electricity it needs to import from the grid.

The installation provides a long-term renewable energy asset for the club, supporting both its energy management and wider sustainability objectives.

Project Results

The completed 50kWp commercial rooftop solar PV system is expected to generate approximately 40,431kWh of renewable electricity each year.

Over its projected lifetime, the system is forecast to generate approximately 948,133kWh of electricity, while delivering estimated CO₂ savings of 7 tonnes annually and 168 tonnes over its lifetime.

Engineering Insight

Golf clubs can be well suited to commercial solar due to the combination of clubhouse facilities, leisure operations and ongoing electricity requirements.

A rooftop solar installation can help golf clubs generate electricity directly on-site during daylight hours, reducing their reliance on grid electricity and supporting long-term energy management.

Before installation, Energy Gain assessed the available roof space and site requirements to develop a suitable system design.

The system was engineered to:

  • Make effective use of available roof space
  • Optimise annual electricity generation
  • Integrate with the site’s existing electrical infrastructure
  • Maintain suitable access for future maintenance
  • Provide reliable long-term renewable energy generation

The completed installation gives Davenport Golf Club an opportunity to generate a proportion of its own electricity while reducing its operational carbon footprint.

Why Solar is Suitable for Golf Clubs

Golf clubs have a range of facilities that can create significant daytime electricity demand, including clubhouses, kitchens, catering areas, offices, leisure facilities and site maintenance operations.

This daytime demand can align well with periods of solar generation, allowing businesses to use a proportion of the electricity generated directly on-site.

Commercial solar can help golf clubs to:

  • Reduce electricity costs
  • Generate renewable electricity on-site
  • Reduce reliance on grid energy
  • Lower operational carbon emissions
  • Support sustainability objectives
  • Make better use of available building roof space

For golf clubs looking to manage long-term energy costs while reducing their environmental impact, rooftop solar can provide a practical renewable energy solution.
